TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS FOR

OLDER ADULTS IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

 

 

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)

Provides reduced fares to seniors on public transportation. The Senior SmarTrip® card for citizens age 65 and older enables seniors to get a discounted fare on Metrobus and Metrorail. Adults aged 65+ and people with disabilities can qualify for discounted bus fares of $1. Metrorail fares are based on distance traveled and time of day.

 

All buses have wheelchair lifts and can lower the door step to make it easier for you to climb aboard. All Metro Rail cars are wheelchair accessible.

GoGoGrandparent

A commercial service that seeks to provide rides to seniors 60 years of age or older more cheaply than regular cabs. Rides available to 100 miles in any direction within 15 minutes of calling from a regular phone. Up to four persons can share the car at no additional cost.

Seabury ConnectorCard Program

Provides older adults, age 60 and over, with a cash-loaded debit card that can be used for ground transportation services to the destination of their choice. This includes but is not limited to taxi services, public transit fare cards, private transportation services, and intercity bus and rail services. This service is provided by Seabury Resources for Aging.

 

The amount of subsidy provided through the card is based on a sliding fee scale. This service helps individuals travel to medical and/or personal appointments at their convenience. Connector cards can only be used with transportation providers that accept Visa-branded debit cards as a form of payment.

Seabury Connector

Free service that takes seniors 60 and older, including wheelchair users, to medical appointments including dialysis and cancer treatment, as well as personal business related to public benefits such as Social Security, housing assistance and the Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Includes DC and the inner Maryland suburbs.

 

Provides curb to curb services offered by minivans that also pick up other passengers. You frequently travel with other passengers. Same-day service is not available. Seabury’s vans will not wait at appointment locations. You must phone after your appointments to request a return trip.

 

Enrollment is required. This service is provided by Seabury Resources for Aging.

MetroAccess Paratransit

MetroAccess, a service of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, is a shared-ride, door-to-door, paratransit service for people whose disability prevents them from using bus or rail. Wheelchair accessible vehicles are available. Riders frequently share travel with other passengers. Same-day service is not available.

Fares are higher than that of the regular bus and subway, but no more than $6.50 per one-way trip (as of 2018).

 

MetroAccess operates 7 days a week, 365 days a year, covering the same service areas as Metrorail and Metrobus. To determine if you are eligible to use MetroAccess, an application must be completed and certified by a health care professional.

Transport DC 

Transport DC provides an alternative transportation service for MetroAccess customers by offering customers door-to-door taxicab or wheelchair accessible taxicab service at a nominal charge ($5 per ride as of 2018) to and from medical and employment destinations in the District. Transport DC provides unrestricted rides for the first 15 days of the month and rides only for employment and medical services during the remainder of the month. Booking requests are granted based on availability. Passengers may take up to two additional passengers at no extra cost. The hours of operation are 24 hours a day/7 days a week. A Metro Access ID is required.

Road to Recovery

Cancer patients can receive free volunteer rides to cancer-related medical appointments through the American Cancer Society.

VETS RIDE

Low-income DC veterans can receive free transportation to and from medical appointments, educational programs, and employment services in the city. Provided through the Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs.

PRIVATE PAY PARATRANSIT

Private pay paratransit is an option for riders who need more assistance than a home care aide can provide, or for riders who use large motorized wheelchairs too large or heavy for other transportation providers. Short trips can cost $50 to $70 round trip.
